A mentor is an everyday person who likes to help others, especially young people. The simple act of a walk together, a game of basketball, or a hot chocolate and a good laugh, providing opportunity for conversation and connection can make the world of difference to a young person who feels disconnected and unheard. You could be this person, someone who provides an opportunity for the young person to be empowered, connected and to begin creating positive potential in their life.

As a mentor, you would be involved in befriending and supporting a young person who is in the care of the Department for Communities. You would be supporting the young person as a stable and positive role model; someone who takes the time to build a relationship that encourages growth and resilience in their life. You would need to be able to commit for a minimum of 12 months, though we hope this may last longer if all is going well. Your commitment is based around catching up with the young person every 2 weeks for 2-5 hours at a time after an initial weekly session for the first 4 weeks.

The Program Coordinator provides initial training and supports you to begin your mentoring journey. Once engaged, you are provided regular individual supervision, mentor group and whole program events, and ongoing support as needed to create positive outcomes for the young person and yourself. Each journey is different and will bring different experiences for everyone, so it is essential to have some space in your life to take this role on.
