What started as a candlelight march in support of refugees and asylum seekers in 2007 has grown to become Queensland’s largest welcoming event at South Bank.

For those of you who have walked with us on our journey to create welcome and belonging for a significant time, you would be familiar with our LUMINOUS Lantern Parade, usually celebrated around Queensland Day, and our MOSAIC Multicultural Festival, a staple on Brisbane’s event calendar in spring.

This year, we are bringing LUMINOUS and MOSAIC to create the largest multicultural event in Queensland’s history. Hosted on Saturday the 3rd of August at South Bank Parklands, LUMINOUS Festival will kick off Queensland Multicultural Month with a showcase of our growing cultural diversity at Brisbane’s Cultural Precinct.   The event will provide many opportunities for Queenslanders from multicultural communities to share stories of their cultures and traditions, and for the broader community to make meaningful connections with Queenslanders from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Multicultural Australia is Australia’s longest serving contracted humanitarian settlement provider, we are proud of the difference we have made in the lives of refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, international students and the wider community in Queensland. Our events help us change the conversation about migrant and refugee communities in wider society; we are creating a platform for Queenslanders to create welcome, promote inclusion, and give new Australians a sense of belonging.

We are looking for volunteers to help with on-site operations and logistics.

LUMINOUS helps create belonging by providing our clients, partners, and the broader the community an opportunity to come together in celebration of our diversity across Queensland. Participants have the opportunity to make their very own lantern and participate in our celebration.
