Environmental advocate - St Kilda penguins (experience required)

Are you an exceptional environmental advocate looking to get your teeth stuck into a project?

Earthcare St Kilda have been the volunteer stewards of the St Kilda little penguin colony for the last 35 years.

Parks Victoria (land managers) have recently entered into an agreement with Phillip Island Nature Parks to take over the protection of the colony, and will charge for colony viewing. We believe that visiting the colony will become financially inaccessible to many, and it will become a connection to nature only for those who can afford it.

We have been fighting this for around 12 months - our group is now seeking an environmental advocate to help us in the final months of the fight (the penguin colony is due to reopen by December 2024). The right person can help us develop and deliver a strategy, with a focus on engaging the local community to put pressure on the State Government and Parks Vic.

The ideal candidate will have experience in:

  • working in the environment advocacy/NFP space
  • experience in designing and implementing an advocacy strategy
  • experience working with State Government agencies
  • demonstrable experience in community engagement/advocacy work
  • a connection to St Kilda or surrounds would be ideal, but not essential

Funding is available for the right candidate. We think the role would be a few hours per week for at least a few months, up until December 2024 at the latest.
