Do you want to:

  • Help Melbourne's refugee and asylum seeker community?
  • Provide essential food relief to those in need?
  • Meet people of different backgrounds and make new friends?

If you answered yes to any of the above, come join a vibrant and collaborative organisation that truly values your ideas and contribution!

The River Nile Learning Centre (RNLC) provides education programs and services to those migrant, refugee and asylum seeker women whose age, visa or personal circumstances prohibit them from being enrolled in formal education or employment.

We also have a weekly food bank that provides free pantry essentials and food relief to the students at the centre, so we are seeking a volunteer for Wednesdays 11:30am - 2:30pm who can help unpack the weekly food order and supervise the students collecting items from our food bank.

Key responsibilities:

  • Unpack and sort the weekly food items in our food bank in North Melbourne (with staff/volunteers available to assist)
  • Supervise the students while the food bank is open (Wednesdays, 1:30pm - 2:30pm), ensuring only 2 students are in the food bank at a time and only 1-2 of each food item per student.

What we are looking for:

  • Reliability (ideally, volunteers would be able to commit to Wednesdays during semester, 11:30am - 2:30pm)
  • Volunteers comfortable unpacking and organising food items
  • The ability to relate to staff, students and other volunteers in a friendly and respectful manner
  • A reasonable level of fitness (as the role involves some bending and lifting food items).

About us:

RNLC is 100% dependent on grants, donations and fundraising, yet we are fortunate to have a small, dedicated team of staff with a deep personal passion and understanding for our work. In addition to our core programs, we also provide a range of critical services that help students to integrate and thrive in the community (e.g. swimming and driving lessons, a food bank). We are conveniently located just opposite the Queen Victoria market and within a 10 minute walk from Flagstaff station. While our student cohort is women-only, volunteers of all genders are welcome.
