Please submit an application for this volunteer position directly through our website only.

The Reading Dogs program is a great opportunity for volunteers who:

  • Are passionate about literacy development in children
  • Are patient and have great listening and communication skills
  • Have previously worked with children, in education, or in community roles
  • Have a lovable and obedient dog who is suitable for this program
  • Are available for at least 1 x 1-hour Reading Dogs session per calendar month, during school terms only

Please note that all volunteers are required to complete our recruitment and selection processes which include relevant screening and security checks:

  • Applicants (i.e. dog owners) will be invited to attend an initial interview with a panel of library staff, then asked to provide contact details for 2 x referees
  • Successful candidates will then enter their dog for the dog accreditation test at one of our libraries with a certified trainer
  • When a dog passes the accreditation test, the volunteer (owner) must then apply for a National Police Check and a Working with Children Check. YPRL will fund the cost of a new Police Check, and a Volunteer Working with Children Check is free of charge.
