Volunteer - Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

  1. Approach visitors in a professional manner, maintaining a high standard of service.
  2. Identify families and visitors who are new to the environment and are seeking information about visiting their loved one.
  3. Orientate visitors on how to use the visitor intercom to gain entry to the ICU.
  4. Provide direction to visitors seeking other areas of the hospital, e.g., directions to the Day Surgery Unit or Coronary Care Unit.
  5. Guide visitors around the ICU, orientating them to where their relative is situated.
  6. Orientate ICU/HDU visitors to public amenities, waiting room and visitor’s kitchen.
  7. Provide refreshments from the visitors’ kitchenette and inform them of hospital facilities such as Zouki Cafés and vending machine around campus.
  8. Liaise directly with Nursing/Medical and Social Work staff to arrange clinical update opportunities for relatives.
  9. Escort grieving relatives to and from family rooms at the request of ICU staff.
  10. Provide visitors with contact details of the ICU by handing out the ICU Business Card.
  11. Provide visitors with information about parking, accommodation and local amenities.
  12. Provide assistance upon request with restocking the comfort care goods (donated by Canberra Hospital Foundation) in the storeroom and restocking the ICU donation trolley for distribution to consumers in need.
  13. Provide social work contact details, if requested by the Social Worker, ICU staff or family.
  14. Report concerns to the Clinical Nurse Consultant during business hours and Clinical Care Coordinator after hours.
  15. Provide colouring in books to children with parents’ consent.
  16. Provide feedback to assist with improvements in the Volunteer Service.
  17. Provide information about interpreter services.
  18. Volunteers will reinforce the important of Hand Hygiene to visitors.
  19. Volunteers will advise and instruct visitors about PPE requirements.
