Do you enjoy watching kids learn practical skills while discovering the beauty and wonder in their natural environment?

Do you love children but are concerned by the effect of too much 'screen time' on their development and social skills?

Blackmans Bay Scout Group are looking for volunteer Assistant Leaders to join their existing team of experienced Cub Scout Leaders. There's approximately 20 Cubs (both boys and girls) who meet at Blackmans Bay Scout Hall on Tuesday nights during school terms between 6.30pm-8.00pm. There will be a couple of out-of-hall activities (e.g. bush walks) and a weekend camp or two throughout the year, however the extra volunteering activities are flexible depending on your personal availability.

Scouts need volunteers who are very reliable, attentive, cheerful and have a can-do attitude - as this is the role model we want for the children. Please note you do not have to have your own children to be good at this! But you do need your own transport and outstanding communication skills - the kids are doing exciting activities and also learning technical skills – they will need you to be able to respond quickly and clearly with instructions and guidance.

What does a CUB SCOUT LEADER do?

THE CUBS: Cub Scouts are boys and girls aged between 8-11 years - this is the second section of the Scouting journey. The Cub Scout program nurtures a deeper understanding of the world around them and helps kids develop team skills, leadership skills and a sense of achievement by doing things for themselves. Cubs do activities which earn them badges themed around health, safety, first aid, outdoor bush skills, camping, science, the natural environment, community volunteering, among others. Cub Scouts are keen to learn, belong, and have fun and our activities are designed to stimulate their emotional and adventurous spirits.

THE LEADERS: Volunteer Cub Scout Leaders with the help of Assistants deliver a range of games and activities in a weekly 1.5 hour session on Tuesday nights. Activities also include short hikes, biking, kayaking and indoor rock-climbing, plus either a once-a-year Group Camp or Cub Camp with one or two night’s camping.

TIME NEEDED: Approximately two hours every Tuesday night 6.30-8pm during term times - one and a half hours helping run the activities, approximately thirty minutes (sometimes less) for set-up, pack-up; plus the 1-2 hr planning time at the beginning of every term.

TRAINING PROVIDED: Free training is provided, both online (own pace) and over two weekends. Scouts is an accredited RTA and there are optional training paths and RPL provided for a number of Cert III and Cert IV qualifications.
