About The Role

As a psychiatrist working in a small team, you will provide high quality health care in the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre Health Program. In return, you will be driven and inspired by the immense resilience displayed by our clients.

Program: Health

The Health team provides comprehensive primary care services together with GPs and specialist clinics including psychiatry, pain management, immunisation and diabetes management to people seeking asylum. Our clients' complex health needs require multiple consultations across a range of health disciplines. The majority of the people accessing our service have no income and are on Visas denying them work rights and Medicare.

Stream: Humanitarian Services

The Humanitarian Services Stream exists to improve mental, physical, and social well-being of members of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. We safeguard basic human rights for people seeking asylum such as food, security, medical care and adequate standard of living, whilst promoting dignity, empowerment and community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assessment and management of the consequences of trauma, torture and forced displacement.
  • Providing ongoing clinical services for people seeking asylum and provide reports to support clients’ protection or humanitarian claims.

What we’re looking for

  • A passionate professional wanting to make a tangible difference in the lives of people from a very vulnerable population.
  • Eligibility for registration as a medical practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent postgraduate specialist qualification.
  • Professional Indemnity.
  • Ideally, experience working with people who have mental ill health as a consequence of trauma, torture and forced displacement.
