VollieCare is currently seeking volunteers to provide emotional support & practical assistance for patients with dementia or delirium or other older patients admitted to hospital.

Support involves engaging patients in social interaction as well as diversional activities.

Duties include:

• Talking to patients about current events & surroundings
• Assisting patients with completion of their menus
• Supporting patients with activities they enjoy based on their preferences.
• Offering comfort to family and friends of patients
• Assist with general activities and tasks that support the unit staff, patients and visitors.
• Communicating any concerns that may arise or any changes that are noticed in the behaviour of the patient.

ACTIVITY IDEAS

• Reading the paper
• Play cards, games, puzzles.
• Listen to music.
• Sit and talk.
• Colouring in
• Reminiscence using activity folder.
• Threading/lacing
• Magnetic tiles/building blocks
• Listening to a reading from a book of faith
• Listen to poetry or stories.
• Craft tabletop activities – make a card.
• Encourage patients to go to dining room for lunch

A commitment of 1 x 4 hour shift a week required.
