Brownie’s Bus

In memory of WWII Veteran Les Brown 1921 - 2022

WWII Veteran Les Brown had long ties with the Repat Precinct having spent time as a patient at the former Repat Hospital in the 1960’s and had been attending ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day Services here for the past 73 years where he had recited the Ode very proudly on many occasions.

Les was part of the 27th Battalion (South Australian Scottish Regiment) and was serving in Darwin at the time of the first bombings in 1942 when he was 21 years old. Les had said, “We went up there all of us young boys with very limited training, we had never even fired a gun.”

After Darwin he was sent to Papua New Guinea where he fought in the Battle of Wau. Following New Guinea Les spent time in Japan as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) for clean-up operations in Hiroshima after the atomic bomb was dropped on the city.

Remarkably Les reached the age of a 100 years, his memory was sharp as a tack, he didn’t wear glasses or a hearing aid, and he lived on his own most of his life.
