Welcomer - Meet & Greet

Pearn's Steam World

The Welcomers (or Reception Staff) welcome visitors and usually give them a brief outline of the layout and history of the collection, as well as collecting the entry fees, selling items from our little shop and being a guide towards answers to their questions. We do not expect volunteers to know everything about the items and have a list of people that might have the answers to some of the varied questions that get asked.

Volunteer times can be flexible for those who are carers, those on school runs etc..

Welcomers/Reception staff can also assist in other ways when on site, such as:

  • Driving the miniature train - Full training is available to drive and operate the 7 1/2" gauge railway train that goes around the site.
  • Researching the stories - There are many items in the collection that we know little about. Researching the story of an item's manufacture, usage and history in the area is a key part of the purpose of the museum.
  • Administration - As a museum recognized at Federal level, we have to properly document and catalogue the items in the collection.
  • Cleaning - There is always plenty to keep clean and dust-free in our large, iconic shed. Those handy with a duster or damp cloth are always welcome.

Everyone at Pearns Steam World is a volunteer. We have a reasonably relaxed and stress-free environment where tea and coffee breaks are as important as opening on time. There is no segregation between ‘departments’: All roles are equally important, and all our team are equally accepted no matter their ability level…. As long as we all stay safe.

Key-holding volunteers are responsible for opening and closing the museum at the advertised times.
