Membership to the Flinders University’s Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).

Flinders University of South Australia

The role of the IBC is to assess, review, and approve research and teaching projects involving gene technology and microorganisms. A position on the IBC is a volunteer, unpaid position and would suit someone that is retired, works part time or has flexible working arrangements. In 2024, the IBC will meet six times in person at the Bedford Park campus, to discuss project applications, physical containment facilities and other matters relevant to biosafety at Flinders University.

The role of the independent member is to assist with reviewing biosafety applications, contribute to discussions, attend committee meetings, and bring an independent view to the IBC.

All members need to familiarise themselves with the Commonwealth Gene Technology Act 2000 and the associated Gene Technology Regulations 2001, overseen by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR), the Australian/New Zealand Standard ‘Safety in Laboratories: Part 3: Microbiological Safety and Containment’ and other guidelines as required. Training in biosafety related matters and Flinders University’s Biosafety Online Portal will be provided. No prior experience in reviewing applications is required but basic computer skills are essential.
