Community Lunch Volunteer

Open House CIC

Logo for Open House CIC

Open House is a small Christian charity organisation that has been serving the community for over 50 years. As a not for profit organisation, we depend on volunteers to help us in the delivery of our services.

We seek volunteers who are kind and caring and committed to our mission of giving long-term friendship and support to young people and adults in our community, particularly those who are disadvantaged or socially isolated.

The Program

The Community Lunch is an opportunity for people to get together to enjoy a hot meal, engage in meaningful conversations and build friendships. For some of our attendees this is their only social interaction during the week, so it is an important occasion for them. In this way, our Community Lunch volunteers directly assist in our mission to tackle social isolation.

The Position

Do you love cooking and sharing food? We require volunteers who have basic food preparation and cooking skills, and who enjoy engaging with people and helping our attendees to enjoy a social outing and hot meal. (Cooking qualification and professional experience are not essential but may be advantageous.)

Responsibilities:

The Community Lunch volunteer works with staff and other volunteers to ensure the lunch service runs smoothly.

Duties may include:

  • Contributing to a safe and friendly environment in the Open House Welcome Centre
  • Assisting our Kitchen Supervisor in preparing and plating meals
  • Setting up tables for lunch service
  • Taking meal/drink orders
  • Serving meals
  • Cleaning tables, floors, and loading dishwasher
  • Preparing cups of tea and coffee

Your Attributes:

  • A desire to engage with people
  • Understanding, patience, and perseverance
  • Punctuality and consistency
  • Role-modelling positive values

This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to:

  • Share their passion for food and helping others
  • Gain experience and skills in food handling
  • Gain experience in a hospitality setting
  • Develop skills in teamwork and interpersonal communication
  • Make a contribution to the local community
  • Be a valuable member of our volunteering team and have an opportunity to get involved with other Open House programs
