Would you like to volunteer your time to support people who are experiencing homelessness to shelter from extreme weather conditions?

The S.A.F.E Centre – Christies Beach Baptist Church, in collaboration with 4H (Hope, Help, Housing and Homelessness) Collective, Noarlunga Uniting Church and City of Onkaparinga are open for expressions of interest for volunteers to support a new Onkaparinga based Homeless Shelter.

With the crazy weather extremes we get of the really cold or really hot temperatures, homeless people are at risk due to:

• living outside
• living in cars
• inadequate dwellings

So whether it's being a friendly and welcoming presence as they arrive at the shelter, you will be able to assist providing them with food and water supplies or shelter

This new service at the SAFE Centre is providing an alternate option to the barrier of mainly having services in the Adelaide CBD.

What would I be volunteering to do?

As a volunteer for this service and the extremes of this weather, you may be called up suddenly to help out, so flexibility in your availability would really be a benefit. You will be asked to provide the service with how much time you can give.

Some of the following roles may be interchangeable during your shift:

• Supporting accommodation set up including communication to volunteers to secure a team for the night.
• Welcoming people as they arrive and helping with orientation around the SAFE Centre.
• Oversight of the people in attendance with connection and conversation, answering questions and highlighting building rules
• Cleaning duties during and after the evening
• Working in a team environment to problem solve any arising situations which may include first aid provision.
• Supporting pack down duties after the evening.
• Learning what services are provided depending on what type of extreme weather and happily helping when and where required.
