To liaise with the Nurse Unit Manager before each shift to establish which patients can be seen. To assist the patient with tray set up, arranging the food and utensils so they are within easy reach of the patient. Ensuring that the patient is comfortable and not distracted. If needed assist with the opening of containers, buttering and slicing. At times making of warm drinks may be required. At the end of a shift liaise with the Nurse Unit Manager to give feedback on the patients seen.

In all instances where patients have had the benefit of volunteer assistance their daily food intake increased. Good nutrition, hydration and companionship are important factors in a patients journey.
