Family Violence Volunteer Mentor

Doncare Volunteer Programs

Are you female and over 35 and want to support a women recovering from the impact of family violence? Living in one of the following LGAs: Monash; Banyule; Boroondara; Whitehorse; Maroondah; Knox and Manningham? Do you have excellent communication skills and the ability to listen and empathize? Are you understanding and non-judgmental? Can you commit to attending monthly meetings and to ongoing learning and skill development?

DAWN is a mentoring program that links trained volunteer Mentors with women recovering from the impacts of family violence. Mentors provide one-on-one support for one to two hours a week for 12-24 months.

A Mentor provides practical and emotional support to a woman, for example by

• Going with her for walks, to cafes for coffee or to movies, • Helping her link in with other services, • Supporting her at appointments or at court, and/or • Helping her access information and resources.

What can the DAWN program do for you? • Volunteers receive initial training to increase their understanding of the nature, prevalence and gendered drivers of family violence and its impacts, and training in the role of the Mentor. • Ongoing training and support are provided via the monthly Mentor Meetings. The DAWN Coordinators also provide support and information to Mentors individually, as needed. • Mentors have the opportunity to support women in recovery from family violence. • Mentors have the opportunity to meet people from diverse backgrounds and experiences. • Mentors have the opportunity to be part of a unique program which benefits from Doncare’s experience as a leading provider of quality community services in Manningham and beyond, for over 50 years
