About the Role

The Foodbank Volunteer will work in a team of Community Food Service volunteers to support people seeking asylum to access essential food and groceries.

Program: Community Food

The Community Food Service Program ensures that people seeking asylum have equitable access to culturally appropriate, nutritious food and basic groceries in a welcoming and social environment.

Our Foodbank enables people seeking asylum to choose food and other essentials for themselves and their families. The Foodbank shop reflects a retail environment that reduces barriers to accessing food with volunteers providing customer service and stock management.

We have two sites, the ASRC in Footscray and the RRH in Dandenong.

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcoming and engaging members as they enter the shop
  • Assisting members while shopping, providing an excellent customer service experience
  • Replenishing food and goods on shelves and maintaining attractive shop displays
  • Escorting members with their trolley to their vehicles, as needed
  • Maintaining a welcoming, clean and safe environment
  • Packing bulk goods into small bags
  • Sorting fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Receiving donations, welcoming donors and recording their donations
  • Sorting donations (fresh and non-perishable food)
  • Picking up of donations or stock in ASRC/RRH van (driving or assisting)
  • Maintaining accurate records using the database
  • Working cooperatively in a diverse team of other volunteers
  • Interacting in a calm and respectful manner at all times with people seeking asylum, volunteers and staff
