Queensland and New South Wales floods: How you can help

Queensland and New South Wales floods: How you can help

The flooding along the east coast of Australia has already seen an incredible groundswell of goodwill and support. As many people experience isolation from storm-related flooding, people have gone to great lengths to ensure the safety of their fellow Australians.

The recovery efforts will be enormous. Homes, community buildings, retail shops and businesses will all be looking for help to salvage what they can.

Find a volunteer opportunity

You can play a vital role in helping these communities rebuild. Get started by exploring opportunities on SEEK Volunteer under our Disaster Relief category.

SEEK Volunteer is also encouraging anyone interested to sign up to the coordinated efforts led by Volunteering Queensland and the Centre of Volunteering in NSW.

Other opportunities to support your local area

In Queensland, volunteers can sign up to EV Crew who are working with several Councils in flood impacted regions to support the coordinated response of volunteers. This clean-up will initially focus on those areas that have received the most damage and have been difficult to access due to ongoing flooding. You can sign up EV Crew here.

In New South Wales, volunteers can also sign up via NSW Emergency Volunteering. Your details will be passed on to organisations in need, who will reach out and let you know how you can get involved.

Donating goods

You can donate goods or vouchers directly to individuals in need. GIVIT has a list of specific items needed, moving away from the concept of donating clothes and items to charity shops. The list changes as requests are filled and new needs are identified by support organisations providing aid and relief on the ground.

Hopefully, you’ll find a home for your donation but if you can’t find a match, you can list your donation and support organisations are able to make an offer to claim it. You can donate goods via GIVIT here.

Make a financial donation

You can also make a financial contribution. Make sure you choose a credible organisation that you know and trust. Some organisations taking donations are:

Red Cross Flood Appeal

Salvation Army

WIRES (Wildlife Rescue)

New South Wales State Emergency Services

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services
