Making volunteering more accessible

Making volunteering more accessible

Did you know that over one billion people around the world have a disability?

There are also many more who have learning or age-related difficulties. Web accessibility is part of what makes an equitable society, making websites easier to navigate for everyone.

It’s nearly impossible to operate in the modern world without accessing websites. So, accessible web design is the key to ensuring fair access to information, resources and opportunities for all. In our case, this not only applies to volunteers but also to the many volunteer managers who use online recruitment methods to attract volunteers.

Our commitment to accessibility

We want everyone to be able to participate freely and equally in all areas of society, including volunteering. We also want to support volunteer managers who may need the support of accessible web design, to do their job to the best of their ability.

SEEK Volunteer’s commitment to accessibility is outlined in our Accessibility Statement.

Here are some of the accessibility principles we’ve applied to both the volunteer experience and the volunteer manager administration portal on SEEK Volunteer.

1. Helpful and sharp colour combinations

High contrast between background and text colours allows for easier readability. Colours are used thoughtfully to highlight buttons, menus, and other navigation components, guiding our users to the next step in their journey.

2. Keyboard navigation to support screen readers

Screen readers are an assistive technology that aid people with visual impairments or disabilities by reading the content of web pages aloud. By using captions, headings and alt text, we endeavour to make our content as easy as possible for screen reader users, so they don’t miss important information on the page.

This also goes hand in hand with keyboard navigation. Users of screen reader often use their keyboard rather than a mouse to navigate a website. So, we make sure our site is easy to navigate via a keyboard too.

3. A better experience for everyone

The great news is accessible web design results in information being easier to find which creates a better user experience for everyone.

We welcome your feedback on the accessibility of SEEK Volunteer.
