The Harvest Lakes Estate in Atwell has always been special, being WA’s first and largest Green Smart Estate. The Residents Association was initiated during the early stages of development with the help of Creating Communities. It was incorporated in December 2004, a move that made it possible to obtain grants from the City of Cockburn and to accept donations from local businesses. The Harvest Lakes Residents Association was set up primarily as a focal point for residents of the Estate and to celebrate and promote the uniqueness of Harvest Lakes. However, over time it has evolved into a group that organises community events for the whole immediate region. Our annual calendar now includes social events Christmas by the Lake, our Autumn Festival in March/April, and in October our Aussie Neighbourhood Breakfast. These events are held on the oval adjacent to the Community/Environmental Centre and Harmony Primary School, and usually include food for purchase, activities for the children and one or more raffles, in addition to the main focus of the occasion. They have become very popular, and people and families from all over Atwell as well as Aubin Grove, Hammond Park and Success turn up to enjoy the fun. In fact, this year we anticipate that our most popular event – Christmas by the Lake – may well see 1,500 people in attendance. The membership structure of the Assoc. is democratic, and our small membership sees every member involved and active in promoting the community in our region. We work closely with members of the Atwell Community Association and are seeking closer ties with other organisations in Atwell and surrounding suburbs.
