Kensington Neighbourhood House

Logo for Kensington Neighbourhood House

The Kensington Neighbourhood House was founded in the seventies, when a group of women from the public housing estate lobbied the State Government for a place where they could meet and have their children cared for. The women were successful in their campaign. The Government donated the property at 89 McCracken Street to the community. It was one of Victoria's first neighbourhood houses. Over the years the House has been extended several times to meet an ever increasing demand on its space. Hundreds of different gatherings, classes and activities have taken place under the roof. The programs change as the community changes. Today the Kensington Neighbourhood House is still community owned and managed and the door remains open to everyone.
