The NSW Organ and Tissue Donation Service is the state-wide NSW Health agency responsible for increasing organ and tissue donation for transplantation in NSW. Access to organ donation and transplantation is vital in the provision of quality health care in NSW – especially when it can mean the difference between life and death. Each year the lives of thousands of Australians are transformed through organ and tissue transplants however more donors are needed for the 1,800 Australians who are on organ transplant waiting lists at any one time. Currently only one in three Australians (39% in NSW) are registered on the AODR. Our vision is to increase the number of registrations on the AODR to the point where registering a donation decision on the AODR is the social norm. NSW OTDS aims to raise community awareness by encouraging discussion about organ and tissue donation, consider registering their donation wishes on the Australian Organ Donor Register and letting their families and friends know of their decision. The service also responsible for educating health professionals about the donation process and offering care and support to donor families.
