The ACE Camera Club began a trial disability workshop in response to an inquiry by a local NDIS provider. The club has always had a strong community focus and this proposal was considered to be a worthwhile project to examine further. Initially, this was expected to cater for up to just a handful of casual participants for two hours on a Tuesday morning. A similar group found it difficult to sustain interest and folded so we weren’t particularly confident about its long-term future. We were later asked by CLA to participate in a combined arts workshop and exhibition which started a temporary Thursday morning workshop. After completion, it was expected to be wound up, but the participants pleaded to have it continue so a Thursday workshop was added. Initially there was not much of an expectation of quality work being produced but we soon realised that we had discovered the skills that existed in a previously unrecognized group of people, many of whom had outstanding talents and abilities.
