Career Volunteer

There truly are not enough hours in the day and the only thing that stops me from doing more is the time element. The thing is, too, I am not alone. There are so many people out there volunteering. You keep meeting them and end up making many new and great friends.

<pubDateLocal>2009-07-07T12:09:38.053</pubDateLocal>

Volunteer for Conservation

Conservation work is altruistic and there will always be a need for volunteers. But being a volunteer for conservation works both ways; you can get out as much you put in. At the same time that you are helping, you will be gaining knowledge, experience, skills and networks to help you in all your life’s endeavours. Volunteering is fun and worthwhile - it fits my favourite adage: it is up to me.

<pubDateLocal>2009-07-07T12:04:21.620</pubDateLocal>

I have met some wonderful local volunteers and lots of young people from all over the world. It has been great to be part of a team of individuals who are all working to improve the environment.

<pubDateLocal>2009-07-07T10:44:26.677</pubDateLocal>

Life is Like a Song

I turned a passion into someone else’s delight – almost a year ago, I decided to play guitar and sing songs to the residents at the Donald Coburn Centre in ARV. I’ve met many people along the way - for some, I wish I’d had more time to get to know them.

But I take away that frustration for a moment and play a melody, familiar or unfamiliar - it makes no difference. A woman burdened by dementia stops crying when I strum the strings on my guitar. She sighs happily when my voice reaches high notes she thinks are sweet.

<pubDateLocal>2009-06-03T10:33:42.143</pubDateLocal>

Alison Hiscocks from ING Australia was one of seven ING employees globally to be offered this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Along with the six other ING volunteers from the Netherlands, Argentina and the United States, Alison delivered 4 x 2 day human resource management and leadership training modules to headmasters, supervisors and education officers in the Tamil Nadu public school system.

ING Foundation Volunteer

ING Foundation partnered with The Spastic Centre on a program named the Ignition Mentoring Program. I received an email from the ING Foundation about this program, and the chance to spend my year as a mentor to a teenager with Cerebral Palsy. I signed up, filled in the forms and waited…shortly after I got accepted, and the night of our first meeting arrived. Sitting at my desk I started to panic, all the ‘what ifs’ started to loom over me, I knew nothing of CP and how to deal or handle these kids??!! I was almost going to pull out of the program, place it in the too hard basket, surely there are people better equipped to handle these programs?? Well I fronted up and met the crew, bunch of kids from all walks of life and varying degrees of CP.

<pubDateLocal>2009-05-14T14:22:09.500</pubDateLocal>

Camaraderie among volunteers at St John's Ambulance

I had a lot of fun and a few wacky experiences as a volunteer medic for St John's Ambulance. Drinking rum and milk with diggers at the ANZAC parade, patching up scraped knees at kids' soccer games and talking down bad trips at music festivals. They trained me up and set me loose in all sorts of war zones.

<pubDateLocal>2009-05-12T14:32:44.137</pubDateLocal>

Bright and Shiny Giving Souls - an insight into the world of volunteering Words

Look up “volunteer” on dictionary.com and the definition you’ll read is that it is “a person who performs a service willingly and without pay”. It goes without saying that volunteering comes from a place of kindness and goodwill.

On Saturday night on 2 May 2009 in the Parkside Ballroom of the Sydney Convention Centre, about 77 volunteers did just that.

<pubDateLocal>2009-05-12T14:26:04.413</pubDateLocal>

You don't have to be amazing to volunteer

For me, volunteering started in a self-serving little place called Planet Brain.

I really wanted it to come from some deep seeded heart throbbing desire to change part of the world, but it wasn't. It was market research for my job. I wanted to volunteer to understand how it worked, what the barriers were and what would inspire others to give it a go.

<pubDateLocal>2009-05-12T14:22:37.507</pubDateLocal>

ACT Rural Fire Service

I wanted to be a fire fighter since I was 4 years of age. I remember sitting in my first fire truck at a fair devastated that they would not let me stay and play with the hose and listen to sirens all day – they told me to return when I was 16. So, on my 16th birthday I returned and I am now one of a handful of people that jump out of helicopters to fight remote bushfires.
Today I am a volunteer for the ACT Rural Fire Service, an apprentice carpenter and an extreme weather hero!

<pubDateLocal>2009-05-11T13:54:05.610</pubDateLocal>

I started volunteering for the SES because I wanted to get out into the community and meet new people. My proudest moment so far has been receiving the Emerging Community Leader of the Year Award by the Maribyrnong City Council (local municipality) on Australia Day 2008 and subsquently the Community Services Group of the Year Award by the Maribyrnong City Council on Australia Day 2009 for the outstanding service the VICSES- Footscray Unit provides to local communities.

<pubDateLocal>2009-05-11T13:39:53.060</pubDateLocal>

Volunteering with Oxfam Australia SkillShare

I wanted to contribute to social justice beyond just giving money. I wanted to be doing some activity that was meaningful to me, as my work, though it was stimulating and fun, didn’t fulfil my aspirations to be “making a difference”. I chose to volunteer my time with Oxfam Australia SkillShare who arrange short term projects in the local community sector for volunteers with professional skills. They’ve contributed skills such as marketing, training, facilitation, graphic design and IT to a diverse range of organisations including those in the fields of environment, housing, disability, neighbourhood houses, advocacy, indigenous and refugee services. I chose this because I support Oxfam’s philosophy of community development and liked the concept of leveraging people’s professional skills to build capacity in the community sector. I could also do small chunks of volunteering to fit around my full time work.

<pubDateLocal>2009-05-11T11:39:20.420</pubDateLocal>

My volunteering odyssey begins some 7 years ago when I started my second attempt at a Bachelor’s Degree. This was inspired upon the guidance of my late-grandfather and mentor, Ruben David, My grandfather suggested I switch degrees from Environmental Science to Communications. My grandfather sent me an article which mentioned that volunteering is an excellent way to get experience. This is where my life took a massive turnaround- from what I will openly admit as ‘being wayward in direction, to finally finding focus’ and from hereon in, I volunteered in various communications roles in non-government organisations (NGOs) servicing the community.

<pubDateLocal>2009-05-11T11:35:43.573</pubDateLocal>

I started volunteering at my children's local primary school by listening to the children read and as I done this every week I realized that I quite enjoyed it. This became a habit and I found that I had skills for example listening and communicating skills, it helped me to be more patient in myself and to the students and I really liked volunteering.

<pubDateLocal>2009-05-07T16:11:44.993</pubDateLocal>

It still seems like a lot of money to raise, when I consider demands in life like everyone - a young family, part time work, community - but I figured I could at least make a commitment to having a good go at it. I started by setting up a blog <http://awomansinvestment.blogspot.com> and a website for people to donate online <http://wonderwebby.chipin.com> . I treid to find out whatever information I could about microfinance projects - loans to the entrepreneurial poor to build their small businesses - and published it on the blog, created slides on slideshare and created Youtube videos using tools like Animoto. I let my online community know what I was trying to achieve.

<pubDateLocal>2009-05-07T15:16:40.660</pubDateLocal>
